Attention all: Rename this Forum? Qur'anic Criticism?
This thread is for feedback on the question of whether this forum should be renamed to explicitly include Qur'anic criticism.
It is now Biblical Criticism and History, and has been understood to include all of Christian history through the middle ages, as well as Jewish history related to the Jewish sacred texts. I believe that we have in the past assumed that the Qur'an would also be included. Non-Abrahamic religions are covered by NARP. There has been some agitation for a Forum or sub-Forum devoted to Islam; as an alternative, it has been suggested that BCH should become ACH - Abrahamic Criticism and History. This doesn't sound quite right to my ear, but the alternatives all have some problem. Please post your suggestions and reasons here. Thank you. |

Or even
Religious Criticism and History? We have had a few non-Abramic religions discussed here on occasion (Mithraism, various pagan groups, Hinduism, Buddhism etc.) Iasion |

Most people here really only want to deal with christianity, because it is the predominant religion of our society, so their interest in the Hebrew bible is the misuse of it by christians. Our efforts are to understand these literatures related because of the society's received religion. I don't know how many people are interested in dealing with Quranic literature in the light of the Judeo-christian documents which are our normal fare. If there are enough, a separate forum would seem to be more appropriate than bundling these disparate studies together. I wonder whether there would be enough interest to make such a forum work. If this is correct, then why not allow discussions of Quranic issues in the general religious discussions forum? It's the "biblical" of the forum name which brings most people here. spin |

We already have "Non-Abrahamic Religion and Philosophy", so an Abrahamic-specialized one would be reasonable.

I vote to retain this as a bible-focused forum. Islamic issues seem to be discussed in GRD.

two sets of literature, since such a relationship was first widely published under Constantine, and since under his rule these two strands of literature (the OT and the NT respecively) were physically bound together in the Constantine Bible. Quote:
issues that relate to the NT, as distinct from those that deal with the OT. Whatever relationship exists between apples and oranges needs to be established first by a specification of an apple and a specification of an orange, according to Peter Kirby. I therefore object to the use of "Abramic" with respect to the NT because I am of the opinion that it is purely Constantinian. Specialisation of subject matter, in particular the critical examination of the Qur'anic criticism, IMO deserves its own forum. Perhaps I am also saying that OT studies and NT studies also need to have each their own forums, at some stage. Summary: separate subject matter, separate forum. Thanks Toto. I believe this arrangement would also assist the moderators of all forums, because posts of necessity should be specific for the discussion subject matter. I know I'm not exactly a veteran, but I would nevertheless like to offer my opinion: I'd prefer this forum stay as Biblical criticism only.
