Default Biblical Codes?

I was watching a program the other day about these codes that suppose to be found within the biblical text. They supposedly predicts the furture. The question I have is why are the only things being discovered in these codes are things that have already happened? And, can someone sit down and accurately predict a future event using these codes?

It appears quite easy to find anything you want in any book, after a particular event has already occured. I do not know how many times this topic has been discussed, but I would like to hear from some of you regarding this matter. Because some of these people promoting these codes are saying they are overwhelming proof of the devine nature of the bible, I need to hear from truly intelligent people. Thanx.

Peace

Bible Codes have been thoroughly debunked at this point.

I, too, caught part of that program the other day. I was surprised to find that it was a fairly recent production (2002 or 2003 IIRC) as I thought the debunking fairly thourough.

BBC's Horizon on the codes. I thought they were unnecessarily kind to the Coder maniacs.

Thanks for the few posts I recieved, even though no one answered the question. Can furture events be forseen, or are only events that have already happen being found in these codes? For the record, I do feel that all of this business about hidden, devine codes is bogus.

Default "predicting events"

On the History Channel tonight, there was a show about Bible Codes, and they claimed that the codes predicted events. Some middle-eastern leader who was assasinated (I forgot which one) was supposedly warned based on Bible Code..but he was shot anyway when he failed to take extra precautions, they claimed.

They also pretty much stated the statistical likelihood of these codes being "random" was astronomical. There were a few refutations from skeptics, kind of at the end of the program after they had already pretty much stated that "Scientific American" agreed the evidence for the authenticity of the codes was overwhelming.

Oddly, the "codes" predict a comet hitting the earth in 2012 (wasn't this Mayan in origin??) And, it they also predicted a middle-eastern peace agreement would be signed by Palestine and Isreal (with UN and Bush all looking on fondly) and the establishment of a Palestinian soverign state in the fall of 2003. Oops!

I tend to feel this is finding "evidence" based on the "evidence" one is looking to find.

It might be interesting if a knowledgeable skeptic set about finding and publishing (in the original Hebrew) a whole bunch of "Bible codes" that basically say that the bible is a load of crap. That would be even more effective a method of debunking than finding predictions in Moby Dick, etc. If the premise that you can essentially find whatever you look for in these sorts of codes is correct, which it appears to be, then doing that shouldn't be a problem, right?

I'd like it alot if somebody did this, but to the believers, it would only be "evidence" that Satan had some input into the codes and is trying to trick the faithful. Can't win.
