Indefinite or simple present: I read IIDB. It refers to something that can be repeated, continuous, or timeless (the "gnomic present"). Definite or present progressive: I am reading IIDB. It refers to some specific event. Satyaraja dasa seems to be claiming that the verb tenses used in John 14:6 have the second kind of meaning, while the context is more consistent with the first kind of meaning. Jesus Christ is describing various things with indefinite time, like the Father's house having many rooms (John 14:2), and I'm sure that John 14:6 is no exception. It is doubtful that JC is reassuring his followers that the Father's house is having many rooms on some occasion. There is a further problem with Satyaraja dasa's attempts to explain away John 14:6 -- there are lots of other places in the Bible that reject and disparage all religions but one. I don't know how he explains away the writers of the Bible repeatedly denouncing idolatry and the worship of gods other than the One True God. That's VERY far from what Hindu monotheists believe, that there is a single god who appears in numerous forms, thus seeming like many gods. ETA: Satyaraja dasa was doing some rather weird transcription, turning eta into a instead of ê; could he have originally done it in some Indian-language alphabet? |
