Default From Israelite to Jew: 18: Jesus and Other Strange Jews

Michael Satlow has a free podcast lecture I’m currently listening to. His views are that the Pharisees weren’t politically active and were mostly concerned with doctrinal issues. Josephus is attributed to giving the information that the Pharisees were a small, separatist sect and distinct from the scribes, priests and other more politically active jewish groups. According to Josephus, the Pharisees also distinguished themselves by establishing a philosophical school of thought and belief in soul/afterlife. Satlow later claims that Rabbis in antiquity believed in a literal bodily resurrection. Comments?

Michael Satlow is also developing a rather ambitious site to catalogue all of the inscriptions available from ancient Israel.

Quote:
Project description

The Inscriptions of Israel/Palestine project seeks to collect and make accessible over the Web all of the previously published inscriptions (and their English translations) of Israel/Palestine from the Persian period through the Islamic conquest (ca. 500 BCE - 640 CE). There are about 10,000 of these inscriptions, written primarily in Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek and Latin, by Jews, Christians, and pagans; about 1,000 are now available in the database. They range from imperial declarations on monumental architecture to notices of donations in synagogues to humble names scratched on ossuaries, and include everything in between.
