Resurrection in the bible
Nowhere in the Gospels does it depict Jesus' resurrection. They "find" him after the fact. In other words, he is placed in the tomb, then a day later, Mary and crew notice an empty tomb.
My three objections to Christian's claims that Jesus resurrected are: 1. The Gospel accounts contradict how he is "found." Read them closely, and the stories do not match. If anyone wants me to provide details (specific scripture verses) to back this up, I will do so. However, if you want to read it yourself, so I'm not accused of taking anything out of context, that'll be better. I hate typing a lot, providing scriptures, only to be told that it isn't relevant or that I'm taking it out of context. 2. There is no outside source, other than the Gospels, about Jesus' resurrection. The Romans did not write about it. Now, that would be impressive. The non-believers writing about the resurrection from their own slant (such as, we saw this body come back to life but maybe he wasn't dead after all...or hey, this is amazing, this guy resurrected like our man-gods have done). They don't even write about other events that supposedly went on during this time period. The dead people coming out of the graves would be newsworthy material for people, even if they didn't buy into Jesus' message. That would be seen as a separate story, worthy of mention. 3. Like I mentioned above, the Gospels do not indicate anyone witnessed the actual resurrection. The story could show people being in awe, amazed, or scared, people trembling as they see Jesus' body regain life. Not only would it make a better story, but if the Christian claim is true that Jesus resurrected, witnessing such an event would have such a profound effect on people and there would be more converts. As we have it now, the Christian story is suspect. Not only because it contradicts itself in the four canonized Gospels, but it doesn't have outside sources to back any of this up, and it just sounds too much like the other pagan man-god religions in which their man-gods also are born of a virgin and become resurrected from the dead. By the way, Happy Easter! Boomeister |

I was just thinking of the South Park episode in which Jesus tells the audience to turn away and he switches the jug of water for a jug of wine.
It just reminded me of what I was thinking, considering the resurrection. Although no one could witness Jesus being resurrected, because he was in the tomb, we are to believe that he was. Just a random thought on this subject. Boomeister |

Good points, I wish I used them.
Not that it mattered, the theist I aruge with often most of the time makes up his own bullshit to fill in the gaps. For example: Matthew 14: The Mustard Seed. You know, have faith to fill a mustard seed you could move a mountain? I pointed out there are numerous people out there with overwhelming faith towards "god" and yet no supernatural events were occuring. He turned around and said that the mountain was the Jerusalam temple and that Jesus was prophesising its destruction. Uh huh, yeah thats an interesting wet dream I told him. Anyway. One of his other 'proofs' that the bible is authentic was that women discovered the empty tomb, since they were second-rate citizens and not males it added more 'weight' to the story. Yeah ... I know ... |

There are plenty of pagan heroes who rose up to Heaven - Romulus and Hercules, for example. Sometimes they reappear to deliver a brief message and then return.
