Battle of the Silly People - Whose Herodian Theory is Sillier?
Yes, I have been avoiding this topic for two years now but since Mary Helena has continually goaded me to get into it with her I have decided to take her up on the offer. We are not going to argue for the distinction of who is correct or more correct but I suggest Mary Helena and I have it out once and for all. We will battle for the distinction of whose theory about Herodian messiahs is more laughable and has less foundation. I will start things rolling with my first serve:
Marcus Julius Agrippa was acknowledged until recent times as the messiah of the Book of Daniel. It was the normative interpretation of Daniel 9:26 in the rabbinic tradition and the Yosippon while Philip isn't even known to any Jews whatsoever let alone as the messiah. Now Mary Helena can now respond with her take |

Shouldn't Grave's Jesus-as-Herodian-bastard-prince theory be included in this?

Sure why not. Maybe Eisenman's work on the Qumran literature too if we feel generous.

Kind of need more information here.
First we have absolutely no info on maryhelena's ideas. As it is stated, as long as you are picking one Agrippa or the other your theory is fine by me. Don't know anything about speculation on who the Jewish Messiah might have been in Talmudic literature, and I really don't care. Theologians believe no end of idiotic nonsense and coming up with something more or less silly for them to believe is par for the course. It's when you start fucking around with actual history that you need to be kicked in the ass. |
