Oath Against Modernism
http://www.dailycatholic.org/oathvmod.htm
Whew! What a piece of prose writing. I wish I could write like that with a largely opposite meaning. The above was recommended reading for someone wondering whether the Masons were bad folks. I seem to recall that Dan Browne's (of Da Vinci Code fame) next book is about the Mason's. Maybe if Dan sees this, he can work it into the storyline. bookworm14 |

That is a mouthful, to be sure. Surely the Catholic Church no longer requires this oath be taken?

And you are correct, it has been recinded in 1967. See http://eutopia.cua.edu/article.cfm?ID=81&Page=4 which is in the center of a long winded explanation and history of the oath. |

In many ways it was rescinded a long time previously. The "Oath Against Modernism" was introduced by Pope Pius X (iirc), and his successors Benedict XV and Pius XI were distinctly more liberal (Pius XI less so). The persecution of Modernists was extreme under Pius until his death in 1914, but practically disappeared from then on.
Benedict XV, Pius's immediate successor, was himself denounced as a "modernist", and upon taking over the seat of St. Peter, found the denunciation on his desk as something his predecessor had been given to deal with. |
