Actually, the long hair may be an add-on of later generations. In many cultures, short hair is the norm among carpenters and other humble folk, but long hair is associated with kingship.

"And he shall be called a Nazarene" -- it says that about the Messiah at some point, right? The fact that Jesus wasn't a Nazarene and therefore not the messiah is, of course, irrelevant..

Nazarene's were forbidden from cutting their hair or drinking any kind of alcohol. So, if he did fulfill Messianic prophesy, he would've had a 30+ years worth of hair growth.

Or it could be semantic confusion between "Nazarene" = member of sect vs. being from Nazareth.
