I tend to agree, though precursors to it may have existed earlier.

( I would probably set the clock around the early 2nd century for the earliest such tradition...)

But there is no evidence of bickering or posturing among the authors of the Gospels. First, the authors of the Gospels are really unknown. Secondly, the date of the writings and actually time of circulation are very wide ranging.

If one reads gMatthew by itself , it would appear that the author of gMatthew is not aware of gMark or any other Gospels, none of these Gospel authors acknowledge any other writing, or make references to any discrepancies in any of the other Gospels.

For example, the author of Matthew does not query the genaeology produced by the author of gLuke, the birth of Jesus or the resurrection. Or the author of Luke does not, depending on who actually wrote first.

These 4 authors appear to operate in a vacuum, but still maintained the core story of Jesus, born of a virgin, did miracles was crucified, died, resurrected and went to heaven.

The discussion with arnoldo was in regard to the NT, not merely the Gospels.

The same holds true for the entire NT. All the authors of the NT are unknown or questionable, the writings are undated or cannot be ascertained.

The authors of the Epistles do not acknowledge the authors of the Gospels, nor do the authors of the Gospels acknowledge the authors of the Epistles. And to show that bickering and posturing among the authors was not really significant, there were more than one person using the name Paul, yet no-one bickered about that.

That isn't really relevant.

Much of the New Testament is obviously not fiction, but I suppose you're referring to the gospels and Acts.

Sure, but maybe what you think is Christianity is not the same thing they thought was Christianity.

It is absolutely relevant. This your claim:

When were the authors of the NT bickering and posturing? When and where did the author of gMark live? Did he/she ever see or talk to the the author of gLuke or the author of 1 Timothy. Did the author of Titus argue with the the author of 2 Corinthians, in the 1st or 2nd century?

What bickering and posturing among authors are you talking about? Can you give me these authors' names and the group to which they belonged?

Have a look at what the author of James has to say about the Pauline idea of faith vs. works.
