I would say that some parts of it are deliberate lies, but most of it is just legends and myths passed down through generations (with heavy editing). No more "lies" than any modern scifi novel, just an intriguing work of fiction.
Of course, if God is real, and it happens to be the Christian God of the bible, then the bible is completely, literally true. But of course. . . |

I just think the bible is irrelevant to me. It's not really a history book now, is it?

An entire book can rarely be classified in its entirety as a lie, especially one written by numerous authors over centuries with many more editors and interpreters.
There's some truth and plenty of falsehood in the bible, that is certain. |

IMHO, in general, superstitious religious beliefs are simply mistaken human beliefs. Is it unlucky to see a black cat? No. So why have people thought that it is? Superstition.
However, the Christian bible is one of those cases where we can see political manipulation all over it. I wouldn't call it a 'lie', but instead a piece of propoganda based on more sincere, but wrong, human superstitious beliefs. |

The ancients looked to the stars for their guidance in planting, harvesting, travel etc. They saw the dying of the sun in December as death and darkness. They saw the return of the sun in spring as a resurection from death and darkness. The Zodiac, which predates the bible writings by thousands of years, is front and center in the bible. The number 12 of the 12 houses of the Zodiac and on and on. They worshiped the 'sun' giver of life and it became the 'son' giver of life.
Religion is power of the few over the many which explains the need to tell the many that they will suffer eternal torment for not believing their various made up creeds which were born of myths and mythical figures. Thankfully, many will think rationally that the concept of a god is no more real that the concept of the tooth fairy or santa claus. The bible is a mythical book steeped in astrology. http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNf-P_5u_Hw |

The evidence shows us that the books contained in the bible were selected and put together by Constantine and his Bishops (and added to later by councils) from the collection of religious and cultural myths and history (some true and some fabricted) of a group of people calling themselves, amongst other things, the Israelites.
