Default Vatican Latin mss online

256 Latin manuscripts have gone online at the Vatican here. Mostly these are from the "Palatine" collection. These are manuscripts from the library of the Elector Palatine, in the principality of Heidelberg in Germany. The loot of the 9th century abbey of Lorsch, destroyed in the 30 years war, was taken to Heidelberg, and the library of the latter ended up in the Vatican as part of the settlement of that conflict.

I've looked through a few and listed those that interested me here.

All the best,

Roger Pearse

They're still developing the site so there is no catalog, but there are lots of important manuscripts, including:

Pal. lat. 170
Hegesippus qui dicitur
Historia, sc. Flavii Iosephi de bello Iudaico opus e Graeco versum atque retractatum
Lorsch, um 800

Pal. lat. 172
Hieronymus
Commentarii in Isaiam (libb. I-X)
Ostfrankreich (?), 1. Hälfte 9. Jh.

Pal. lat. 873
Livius, Titus
Ab Urbe condita (Decas I)
Italien, 15. Jh.

Pal. lat. 881
Caesar, Gaius Iulius
Commentarii
Italien, 15. Jh.

Pal. lat. 898
Suetonius Tranquillus, Gaius
Vitae Caesarum
Italien, 14. Jh.

Pal. lat. 915
Curtius Rufus, Quintus
Historiae Alexandri Magni
Italien, 15. Jh.

Making these manuscripts readily avaqilable should stimulate scholarly interest for quite some time. (For some reason, though the site is in Italy with a .it domain name, it's in German.)

Thanks, again, Roger, well done, as always....

I am unable to confirm that observation, perhaps the cyberspace genii have changed the url in the last eight hours. The site I visited is from Vatican City, and the web site is written in Italian.

Maybe I am looking at the wrong group of Palatine manuscripts? Number 266, by Gregorius Magnus, written in Latin, (original dating from 6th century), found in "middle or southern Western Germany", i.e. Mainz vicinity.

Die Handschrift befand sich vermutlich einstmals in der Lorscher Bibliothek.
Maybe that's what is meant by "it's in German"? That's simply confirming, as Roger explained, that the original was taken from the 8th century Abbey of Lorsch. Lots of warfare, lots of destruction, lots of questions about provenance of these documents.
