No one is claiming that there is a real globe-trotting Harvard symbology professor who uncovered an ancient Biblical cover-up with the help of a French cop. But non-fantasy fiction often incorporates real or plausible elements.

Brown is on record as saying that the alternate Jesus timeline is based on real scholarship, and it is - the aforementioned Holy Blood, Holy Grail. It is my understanding, however, that the balance of evidence points to the Priory of Sion registry being a mid-20th century forgery.

I enjoyed the DaVinci Code as fiction. As for Holy Blood, Holy Grail, I tossed the book across the room when the authors insinuated that the notoriously fraudulent Protocols of the Elders of Zion might be based on some kind of fact. Bah.

I'm told it was almost expected that Rabbi's of the time would be married, and if JC wasn't, that would be noteworthy. Perhaps JC was Gay?

The book is explicitly a work of fiction. What am I supposed to think? I haven't read the book, so I'm unable to offer any literary criticism. But the only applicable criticism to a work of fiction is literary.

When I read "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" I remember thinking it would make a great basis for a fiction novel - guess I should have tried it!

People being upset about Jesus possibly having a wife/lover isn't that shocking, in Catholic school we were taught about Mary "ever virgin". Yes, that's right, apparantly there is a whole group of people who believe, even though she was married, Mary never had sex.

In fact, it is Catholic dogma that Mary lived a sinless life - the Immaculate Conception.

Wait a minute, are we are not talking two Mary's here? Mary mother of Jesus and Mary of Magdalena..the famous slut (also referred to as Mary the blower, by Paul). Or do I need a refresher course on NT?

I don't think the "virgin" to whom Tulipa was referring is supposed to be Mary Magdalene.
