Sanskrit pra- 'before, forward, forth'; jan- 'generate, beget, create'; pati- 'lord, master' --> Prajapati 'lord of creation'. Used for several deities, like Savitri, Soma, Agni, Indra etc. Compare Skr. devapati- 'god-lord, lord of the gods', used for Indra, with Persian dyauś pitar 'god father, father of gods' -->? Jupiter.

Japheth is actually a borrowing from Greek, Iapetos, the founder of the human (Greek) race after the flood. The table of nations in Genesis is heavily influenced by Greek thought.
Right and wrong, I think. Iapetos was not the Greek Noah--that was Deucalion, yes? But I think Deucalion may have been descended from Iapteos, so there's an association.

But the identification I think is probably right--the Catholic bible, for one, doesn't quite say so, but it does note many other parallels.

The link with Jupiter is pretty unlikely, despite the vague resemblance.

A read for what purpose?
My mistake, I read into something you posted above and thought that you may have a positive view of Christ Myth ideas.

I am Just trying to get my bearings among all the areas debate regarding Jesus.
As I mentioned, I am(?) a Christian... sort of... Well, maybe now I'm an agnostic with a creeping sense of "what if." Anyway, you could say that I am waking up from a long nap. So that's why I am a such a sponge right now. :Cheeky:

If you are interested in the Jesus Myth, read the Jesus Puzzle ( www.jesuspuzzle.com or buy the book).

Only the Iapetid line. Ham gets most of non-Semitic the bad guys. Shem, as you might understand gives the Semitic family.

Ta, Anders.

-------------
the_cave,

While Deucalion was the Noah figure he wasn't a founder of a line to my understanding.

little,

agnosis is a good healthy state to be in. It's not so easy, because you have to think, but that's good, isn't it? It's you doing the processing: you're not on overdrive.

Good morning,

I have found that the coffee is usually on here, with the fragrance wafting through the air.

man, I can't believe I missed this discussion. Damn work! Anyways... Damn, an other IndoEuropean discussion missed.

BTW - How can people truly be so stupid? mehercule! Iuppiter isn't even the "father of the races" and has clear etymological roots if only someone decided to use a DICTIONARY!

Where there's a will...

I haven't dealt with Uranus nor mine. Varuna the sky god is linguistically related to Uranus. I'm sure you could add some insight, somewhere.

Thank you. I knew about Shem; had forgotten about Ham, isn't he supposed to be the southern predecessors of the Semites?
