Hello,

Posting in this forum because many here speak/can read and write Greek. I was wondering how to translate 'drug' to Greek, so I can create an all Greek word for drugphobia.

Any guesses?

An on line dictionary gives these words in modern Greek, with familiar roots:

drug = φάρμακο, ναρκωτικό
pharmako, narkotiko

Google translate gives ναρκωτικά

I know about Google translator. The problem is the Greek letters. How do I convert them?

Narkotikophobia, then. Pharmako is more used with medicine.

I would recommend Latinizing the Greek (for example, the Greek Perikles comes out as the more familiar Pericles once Latinized).

Either narcoticophobia or pharmacophobia sounds okay to me, but (you are right) the first one sounds in English more like an irrational fear of illicit drugs while the second sounds more like an irrationaly fear of legit medicines.

Dear Deleet,

Are we talking about therapeutic drugs? If so, we know who was quite popular for their dispensation of such in the antiquity of the Roman empire.

It's pharmacophobia.

As far as I know, there isn't a specific word for the fear of illegal drugs.

No, I meant as in illegal drugs. Technically I want to call my country for [-phibia] because they have banned psychedelic mushrooms.

Why not shorten it to "Narcophobia"? It's easier to pronounce, and is there any reason to be slavish to the greek when you are simply using it as a general source?
