Default Peter Jennings Special...

Is anyone planning to watch ABC's Jesus Special tonight? I'll be in class so I'm going to miss it. I haven't really heard much about it, but some conservative Xian pundits on the radio this morning spent 20 minutes ranting about it. I'd be interested to read a critical review by someone here. I'm going to try to get a copy on tape.

CBS? But it's on ABC.

Unless, of course, "CBS" in this post refers to something other than the Columbia Broadcasting System!

If so, could you provide a link to the said forum?

My bad. Of course I meant the ABC forum linked on the ABC page for the special.

Too right! Worse yet there's at least a few of those pinheads on the secular side of the fence. Ill informed, rhetoric-spouting nontheists almost annoy me more than sappy, wobbleheaded fundamentalists.

NY Times: Dispassionate Documentaries Seek Truth of Jesus

Quote:
"The Passion" has become a kind of 21st-century Scopes Trial: despite the broad consensus, public officials, church leaders and even network anchors feel obliged to prove, again and again, that Jewish collective guilt, like creationism, is an atavistic myth. . . .

The ABC documentary painstakingly shows how much Christian dogma — including much-disputed rules about homosexuality and procreation — were based on St. Paul's Letters. Ms. Pagels calls those Epistles "theology written on the run." The documentary also looks at St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians — used by the Nazis to justify persecution of the Jews — and absolves St. Paul of deliberately inciting anti-Semitism. "It is true that Paul could be very nasty," Mr. Jennings says, citing his harsher Epistles. "But if you look closely, you see that Paul is really arguing with his fellow Jews."
But there's this from Faux News:

Quote:
The Fox News documentary "Who Is Jesus?," which was shown on Sunday and will be repeated on Friday, is a little different. It is a historical travelogue that also seeks to reconcile a paucity of archaeological proof about Jesus with the rock-hard faith of Christians. It features a former atheist and journalist who investigated the case of Jesus and became a believer.
Lee Stroebel, no doubt. :banghead:

Disclaimer: I only saw the latter two hours or so of the show.

I thought the show was great. My main annoyances were the music and that Baptist Pastor who seemed to be giving a contemporary spin on the texts rather than contributing to the historical discussion.

The rest of the scholars seemed to be tops in their field. I especially enjoyed seeing Alan Segal, E.P. Sanders, and Rodney Stark.

As for the Fox special, I was not impressed at all.

I can agree with that 120%
