It's startling, isn't it? Sexism in the 1st century. Who would have ever dared thought there was sexism back then? And coming from Paul...What more liberated and gender issue concious man ever walked the earth?

Granted, not much of a knee-slapper, but he's trying to make light of an awkward situation. By the time John's gosple gets a hold of Jesus, all manner of humanness is taken out of him. Yuck!
I think that the NT is one of the funniest books I have ever read and the fact that it is also so tauted as such a serious work just even adds to the dark humor.

Beyond that is thoroughly disgusting.

Christ constructed our understanding of ourselves in an indelible way. And how did he do that? By showing us himself. All of himself.
I sure wouldn't call steve jobs a genius. The computer was a process that started hundreds of years before him and it obviously continues.

Jesus by the same token used wisdom that was created hundreds of years before him, but also created much of his own that were mainly either outright lies, ill-considered, or fallacies.

Both people have made their lives a sure success really only on sheer popularity and not realize it. Why is this suppose to be humble?

Our? Maybe yours. Christianity is a massive religion, but it doesn't represent the world.

Also there isn't really a single version of jesus.

Not to mention that Christianity's early growth came largely because it treated women so much better than the dominant culture. See here, for example.

If press reports are accurate (a major assumption, I grant), this statement is highly deceptive because
  • the case was settled on undisclosed terms, so we can't know if the case was frivolous (settled for nuisance value) or not;
  • the quotes I read from Dr. Patterson were (intentionally?) ambiguous as to what the plaintiff women were or were not asked to do; and
  • the initial dismissal was procedural rather than substantive, with the ultimate dismissal due to the settlement, which is typical for every settled case, frivolous or otherwise.
