Is kaneh-bosm cannabis?
Sula Benet, a Polish anthropologist, asserted that the kaneh-bosm that goes in the holy annointing oil of the Hebrews is actually cannabis instead of "sweet cane" or calamus as it is normally translated.
She came to this conclusion through etymological analysis Even if I was familiar with the analysis she used, I'm sure it would be way over my head. Here are some wiki links on the issue: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sula_Benet http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_anointing_oil http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabi...-Christian_use Experts seem to be split on the matter. Are any Hebrew scholars or otherwise qualified people here who could give me their opinion on the matter? If kaneh-bosm was indeed cannabis, then it's no stretch of the imagination that the annointed priests (and Jesus himself) would have experianced a strong psychoative response as a result of the annointing oil, which would probably change many Christian views on the "devil weed." The active ingredient of cannabis, delta-9-THC and other cannabinoids are fat soluble and would have been absorbed into the olive oil used in the annointing oil, and from their into the bodies of the annointed (especially since they were covered in it). |

There is a previous thread that contains a lot of information on this (once you get past the expected jokes), including a research paper by a poster who hasn't been around lately.

Thankyou, I knew I should have searched for it first (seriously, what were the odds that it would have gotten past this forum until now?)
