JW:

THE PANARION OF EPIPHANIUS OF SALAMIS (or via: amazon.co.uk)

Translated by Frank Williams

Page 74

Quote:
7,4 And they constitute the following of the same figures - "Abrasax" makes 365, as I said - and indicate, if you please, that this is why each year has 365 days. (5) But his silly argument is no good; a year in fact consists of 365 days and three hours. (6) Then, he says, man also has 365 members for this reason, as though one member were assigned to each of his powers. Thus his contrived, spurious teaching fails in this as well; there are 364 members in a man.
JW:
With Apologies to Roger Pearse, here eHP thinks he is exposing Gnostic arguments as nonsense. Compare the above critique to orthodox proof-texts from the Jewish Bible. The most disgusting thing in Panarion is Epiphanius' hypocrisy. It's okay for the orthodox, guided by a nebulous spirit, to use nebulous proof-texting of the Jewish Bible but it's not okay for the gnostic guided by a nebulous spirit, to use nebulous proof-texting of the Christian Bible.
