Earl, your analogy is indefensible. It's that simple. Trying to justify your analogy is pitiful.

I only hope that the result of this instructive episode will be the return of GakuseiDon on this blog once he's surmounted his congenital shyness and emerged from his traumatic thrashing. As a maverick, his contribution is needed to make this thread a little more lively and dispel the scent of Catholic sainthood that is too often sprinkled here in the guise of rhetorical holy water.

You say there:

, the administrator of the thread on FRDB agreed that it was highly inappropriate in a discussion dedicated to Jesus's historicity.

He announced "Current political commentary has been split from this thread and locked."
I expressed no opinion of the original comparison, but clearly any mention of Hamas or the Palestinian situation sets off all sorts of digressions that have no place in this forum. Splitting the whole thing off was just the easiest way of dealing with it.

We have a separate forum for debating politics. Anyone who wants to pursue the issue can post there, although rules about personal comments tend to be enforced more rigorously.

GDon is not a maverick. He is a regular who drops in here on occasion when it suits him. I somehow doubt that he would agree with the term "traumatic thrashing."

Is it now in a separate forum for debating politics?

Searching the 'World Issues & Politics & World History' Forums turned only one single mention of Hamas.
Kind of minimal for a subject and 'issue' that is having such a major impact on our world and its history.

Does 'Freethought' really mean stifled, restricted, and censored thought?

Probably not as relevant for such classrooms as Albert Schweitzer's The Quest for the Historical Jesus (or via: amazon.co.uk). Heck, it isn't even the most relevant book for the study of the belief in the Christ myth theory in the 20th century. There was a time when the question was debated among scholars, not just among the lay public, and the most influential such author was (and remains) Arthur Drews, author of The Christ Myth (or via: amazon.co.uk), which laid the political foundation for the Christ myth theory being the official doctrine (concerning the historical Jesus) of public education in the Soviet Union.

It is in Elsewhere. If you want it moved to Politics, make a request to the Elsewhere mods.

Albert was the first of such books and the Soviets lost the battle of ideas, neither of those two books is as good as Doherty’s

I am not judging the quality but the popular influence. Both books were far more influential than Doherty's books. Doherty's books are influential only among a small current niche, and they don't even include the most popular book within that niche. That honor goes to Acharya S's The Christ Conspiracy.

Albert Schweitzer's book was not the first of such books, either. The debate extends through the 19th century. Bruno Bauer of the mid-19th century is the grand-daddy of the Christ myth theory.
