Default Library of Alexandria

You may know about the almost legendary Cecil Adam's webpage, The Straight Dope http://www.straightdope.com/index.html . He covers a myriad of topics, and is blessed with a great research team, which consequently allows him to get to the bottom of most issues. He has just tackled the issue of The Disappearance of the Library of Alexandria, http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/...erlibrary.html ,and has done a usually delightful job of surveying professional opinion in the field, although I find his ending to be just a bit uninspired, if not drab. His survey of opinions is quite good, and I very much like the way he deals down with the ridiculous Caesar hypothesis. I still wonder though, what is the current scholarly consensus on the issue? I fear perhaps the problem might never be solved, though I would like to see the absolutely ridiculous Caliph Omar yarn not mentioned ever again, since whenever it does get mentioned the person mentioning it is usually smart enough to dismiss it as the poppycock it is.
