The Istar/Innana cult in Mesopotamia certainly was a "mystery" cult and presumably had sacred and secret "mysteries". The whore of babylon seems pretty easy to identify, especially when we contrast the sexual repression of the Semitic patriarchs with the libertine "free love" approach consciously embraced by the Sumerians. That said, I agree with Fortuna that this metaphor is being applied to Rome (although most of those conditions, the may nations etc, did apply to Babylon too.)

Wait a minute here !
BeanPie,
Yes, I acknowledged that I "believed" that it is "as simple as that", because in this case, the author tells us that he is going to tell us who the WOB is, and I believ that he does exactly as he said he was to do. No offense was intended. but the clues are very compelling. Have you never heard the idiom that describes Rome as the city of 7 hills ? I have offered you more than opinion. I showed you some clues from the text itself, and those clues are very compelling and somewhat obvious. Further, the author indicates to us that he really wants us to know who the WOB is, telling us that he is going to tell us, and he does. Can you offer anything that he did not refer to the Rome of his time, but instead to the Americas as you have indicated in your OP ? |

Fortuna,
Thank you for, your last e-mail. It has inspied me, to study more. I am in the process of carefully re-reading Rev. 17-18. I shall also give myself a "crash course", in ancient Roman history, as my knowledge is very limited. Shall address the "Mystery", upon completion. And by the way, no offense taken or, intended. |

Revelation, the original Jewish version is a good verse by verse deconstruction of the symbolism used in Revelation. It explains the "Mystery", why Babylon is a reference to Rome and many other elements.

I'm glad to see you're open to learning new things, and will research a viewpoint.
Discussion is so much more fun than spouting off opinions and leaving it at that. You learn so much more. |

my opinion...
I believe Rev. is talking about Rome but, I believe it refers to America. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that, America is the modern Babylon or Rome. Too many similarities. That is my opinion.
SIDE NOTE: I found it interesting that, the beginning of the Christian religion was in Rome and now, America is the most poowerful "Christian" nation. I would also like the following chapters, critiqued... http://seventhfam.com/temple/books/black_man/blk57.htm http://seventhfam.com/temple/books/black_man/blk58.htm |
