Pitiful defence argument made me boil with anger, he'd been here 10 years and hardly spoke English??? He felt like a fish out of water??? Bollocks.
Honour killing?? Makes me sick to my stomach he was the one who brought his daughter over here, how else did he think she'd grow up??? Yet I'd rather it happened here and not in their native land else he'd probably have gotten away with it. What is it with this "honour" thing anyway??? Do the opposite of what your father wants and you deserve to die??? Pisses me off royally. Bastard. |

So-called "honour killing" is a widespread problem in a number of muslim countries and among muslim immigrants in the West.
It is usually carried out by male relations: fathers, brothers, cousins and occasionally sons. Although this practice flourishes among muslims, I don't think it can be blamed directly on religion, but more on the evaluation of women according to religious norms. Women are not seen as independent agents with the right to make their own life decisions. In most countries in the Middle East such killings are only lightly punished, if at all. I saw yesterday on BBC World TV that the British police have announced that they are going to look into this problem in view of the fact that at least 12 such killings a year are to be expected in the UK. Their spokesman said that there was nothing honourable about it: it was straightforward and despicable murder. |

It's also a problem in some non-Muslim societies. An article I read today mentioned that there have been "honour killings" (now there's an oxymoron) in Sikh and Christian communities, too.
I don't think it's a religious problem, it's cultural. |

Trying to pin it on any one particular religion, when the issue clearly transcends individual religious boundaries, is pointless and dishonest.
Forget the religion, it's irrelevant. Punish the behaviour. Hard. Which, I might add, is precisely what has happened. |
