I think translators generally want to express things correctly in the language they are translating into.

Your problem is that you have taken the Strong's definition of the verb - to abhor and failed to modify it based on the first tav (letter).

תְתַעֵ֣ב verb piel imperfect 2nd person masculine singular.

This changes the meaning of תָּעַב.

I always put in a disclaimer that I know even less about Hebrew grammar than I do about Hebrew, so I won't be too devastated if someone corrects my explanation.

On a more practical level however, would a guy put a mistranslation into the title of his doctoral disertation? Would all the translation in biblos be technically wrong as well as JPS?

The verb is not the issue here. The issue is the Hebrew word that is rendered as either Edomite or Aramite. Note how similar these Hebrew words appear and how they easily can be mistaken for the other.

Btw, there is a verse in the LXX that substitutes 'Syrian' for 'Edomite' that I noted many years ago. I shall try to find it again.

When I'm at work I use this link for the JPS (1917) text

The problem is a scribal error. The guy mistook the dalet in vadmim for a resh and came up with varmim. The JPS Hebrew notes this in parentheses. This is an easy mistake to make, note how similar the two letters look. Keep in mind that the vowels (the little things on the bottom plus any dots in or above the letters) are added in as reading aids for people who aren't familiar with Hebrew and weren't in the original text.

The Jewish concept of these errors is that they are meaningful. It appears that the Christian concept is similar.

This particular example is clearly an error and the JPS corrects this in the English.
