Another quote from that article:
He says the goal is not to prove that Jesus never existed, but to acknowledge that it is a legitimate field of inquiry that needs to be examined objectively. One wonders, however, how many actual mythicists are on the panel. Is Wells there? Price? Detering? Ben. |

Robert Price is technically a Jesus-agnostic.
The link is to the upcoming CSER conference, which has been mentioned here recently in connection with R. Joseph Hoffman's lectures in LA. It's not clear that every scholar at that conference will be part of the Jesus Project, or that it will be limited to those at the conference. CSER has been around for a while, but I gather that Hoffman is breathing new life into it. I have heard Hoffman speak twice in LA recently, and I don't know his position on the existence of Jesus, but I suspect that he has some healthy amount of skepticism. His interests are the heretics. ETA: forgive me if I suspect that this is a bit of PR for the upcoming conference. I would not be surprized if the Jesus Project is announced at the conference, and scholars are invited to join it, as scholars were invited to join the Jesus Seminar. The whole thing may be a trial balloon, and may or may not fly. It will be interesting to see if established scholars boycott the idea or sign up. |

It could also be a false debate, to show that "scholars have considered and refuted the issue."

I would put Pagels as the wild card! If she has been reading this stuff, she may turn to the dark side!
