Default Was the author of GMatthew familiar with the Hosea?

Hi.

Since I’m logged on I figure will ask this. It’s a genuine question: I honestly don’t know.

I’m looking for a passage from Matthew that demonstrates that the author was familiar with Hosea.

Can anyone help me out?

The supposed fleeing of Jesus to Egypt appears to be based on Hosea 11.1 and is only found in gMatthew.

Matthew 2:14-15
Quote:
When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt

And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.
Hosea 11:1 -
Quote:
When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.

The supposed words of Jesus in Matthew 12.7 appears to be from Hosea 6.6.

Hosea 6.6
Quote:
For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice....
Matthew 12.7
Quote:
But if ye had known what this meaneth I will have mercy and not sacrifice ye would not have condemned the guiltless.

Excellent. Thanks. The reason I asked is because Matthew seems to have relied on Jonah 1:17 for his ‘three day motif’ instead of Hosea 6:2. He also missed Mark’s allusion to Hosea 9:10-16 in Mark 11:12-21.

In Mark (and Hosea) the fig tree serves as an intro and an outtro. It symbolizes what will happen to Israel. Mark treated it as a prophecy - but Matthew didn't get it. He collapsed the two fig tree events into a single event and treated it as a miracle.

So that got me thinkin – maybe Matthew never read Hosea.
