The meaning of Prophet? Is Thomas Paine's definition accruate?
I have begun reading "The Age of Reason" by Thomas Paine. In his book is a quote which I found quite interesting.
"The case is, that the word prophet, to which latter times have affixed a new idea, was the Bible word for poet, and the word prophesying meant the art of making poetry." Is this accurate? Could anyone give me any information or direct me to further reading on this subject? I can only begin to imagine the implications that this definition would have on the literal translations of the bible. |

Quote:
There is evidence that prophetic activity existed in the ancient Near East BEFORE biblical times. It may have originated in Egypt or around Mesopotamia. There is a good article in Harper's Bible Dictionary that is informative. rodahi [This message has been edited by rodahi (edited June 17, 2001).] |
