You have a different version to me. My Bible says "but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die." It doesn't mention the day, just that they will surely die, and they surely did.

I think its you who needs to learn to read. Genesis 4:22 Adam and Eve were imortal in the garden of eden because the tree of life is there. God cast him out of eden thus taking away his imortality. Once you understand this you should be able see why gods warning is not a contradiction that any intelligent person would want use in a debate.

You're right. Without karlydee (a guy, BTW) or Ish (who actually read hebrew), it's probably hard to pin it down more precisely. Still, there are plenty of obvious contradictions in the bible.

SingleDad, was quoting from the King James, and that is exactly what it says: ...for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

The version you quoted from is probably the New International, and it leaves “day” out. The New Revised Standard states it like this: but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.

The Hebrew equivalent for the word “day” is “yowm”, and I think it is used in the older Hebrew texts. I think in this instance both the New Revised Standard and the King James do a better job of translating this pericope than the New International.

I personally have never understood how theologians have been able to give the serpent a bad wrap for this incident. The serpent said they wouldn’t die on the day they ate of it(most versions). God said they would. They didn’t die on that day. But that’s why I said other believers want to allegorize it by re-interpreting this now to say it was a spiritual death instead of a physical one.

I’m sure you are aware also of the Tree of Life, of which this biblical god didn’t want them eating from either. But considering Adam lived to 930 years, I don’t think the fruit he ate was so bad either.

At the risk of extending this Fruit-Eating Thread, I'll point out that A & E did not "die" as a result of eating the fruit. They were killed (either spiritually or, eventually, bodily) by God as punishment for eating it. Maybe YHWH should have rephrased his warning.
