Kate, it seems that Boro Nut missed the point. That happens rather frequently around here.

I suppose I can give it a go. It seems to me, that the most obvious answer is that the flood was localised rather than worldwide. This solves nearly all the problems and complaints relating to the flood.

Of course a fundalmentalist isn't going to believe this for five seconds, because the bible says that every living being on the earth died and that the flood covered all the mountains on the earth.
Unfortunately modern readers have a tendency take an omniscient view point, where as all ancient literature including the Bible shows a definite tendency to have a very specific view point.
The flood account may have been compiled from a source written by Noah during or after the flood: All of the earth (ie from horizon to horizon as far as he could see) was flooded. Even the highest mountatins (that he could see in the area) were covered.

Whether or not such a localised flood is reconcilable with the Bible basically depends on who you believe wrote it. If it was dictated directly by an omniscient God, then of course a localised flood is not an option. But if the account was written by a human writer then there is nothing stopping it being merely a local flood, but global from his point of view.

If we grant the possibility of a local flood, then the vast majority of the complaints about a global flood no longer are relevant.
