The Fish, the Skeptic and the Anti-Tract
Visiting the humour forum in order to inject some light into the dark recesses of my existence, I stumbled across this link...
http://www.geocities.com/llfptfu/sf.html ...and I just wanted a second opinion on it. Exactly how reliable is it, and should I take what it states seriously? |

I have read something like this before. There are some hard copy sources at the end of the tract.

I have no source.
Now that that is out of the way, I had thought that the reason the underground christians adopted the symbol was because of its similarity to the greek letters chi and rho. I can see how the r-like rho, followed by the x-like chi could be seen as similar to the fish symbol. Anyone know? Bookman |

I've read this before, though not in an amusing Chick styled tract. It is at least somewhat plausible, but I can't give any sources to indicate the truth of the claims.
However, the Chi-Rho concept is really quite unlikely. The Roman Catholic Church today still uses the Chirho as a symbol of Jesus; 'rho' actually looks like an english P, and the Chirho is drawn by placing an X through the stem of the P, beneath the loop. |

Good luck. It's a bit of a mix of truth & speculation. The Goddess stuff is true but to claim the Christians 'took' it is a stretch, as claiming they 'took' the cross symbol from the Sumerians 5000 years ago, to them it was 'Nibiru' it was the crossing of 2 planets. In all likelihood the christians used the fish symbol to mark there secret meeting places 'a fisher of men' explanation is just as likely. or how about the age of pices, which is just comming to an end now, or the dew cup the 'holy grail' from which ancient preists drank the menstral blood of the Annunaki birth goddesses to give them long life. or the Egyptian ankh!

The fish symbol was adopted by Christians so that they could identify one another without raising suspicions during times of persecution.
The greek word for fish is "Ichthus" (iota, chi, theta, upsilon, sigma). It was used as an acronym for "Jesus Christ, God, Son, Savior (similar to what the otherwise goofy link said). The Greek words were: IESOUS CHRISTUS THEOU HUIOS SOTER (I-ch-th-u-s = fish in greek). There you have it. The rest of that link was purely the author's imagination. Ish |

Thank you Jesus!
I feel I must modify my last statement: "The rest of that link was purely the authors' imaginations." Ish |
