Of Jews and Gentiles (Q for Thiests of the Week)
I found myself wondering about this yesterday
while pulling weeds in the yard (not sure of the Freudian implications of why pulling weeds made me think about Christianity...) If you believe the OT, then ALL persons on the Earth must be descendants of Noah. Right? I mean there was this big ol' flood, and only Noah and his kids made it through. Then they went out and populated the world (well, the middleast). Then the tower of Babel thing happened which accounts for the different languages and cultures spread out across the world (and guess that could explain the marsupials down under as well). But still, you would have to hold the view the all people descended from Noah (and even if you discount the flood myth, they would all be descended from Adam and Eve). So..... where does this bit about the Jews being God's chosen people, with all others classified as "Gentiles"? Wouldn't all Gentiles be Jews as well (although, I guess they'd be considered lost Jews? Or maybe wandering Jews?)? Just curious if someone could explain that to me and point out my mis-understanding. thanks. |

Regardless, you might think they would have remembered that... However, it was an awfully long time from then until writing was invented. Ish [ July 23, 2001: Message edited by: Ish ] |

The Flood occurred after the Egyptians began recording their history (the Egyptians of the "Valley of the Kings" noterioty and not the Egypt located in the vicinity of Qumran) and even though the Flood occurded "after" their history (ability to write) began, their lifestyle continued unabated without their knowledge of such an event ever happening.
