What is the best Bible translation?
The Tanakh by the Jewish Publication Society is the best "Old Testement" translation IMO.
Any others? [ July 29, 2001: Message edited by: MykW ] |

Of the major translations, I believe that the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) is considered by the consensus of textual scholars to be the best. I would recommend The New Oxford Annotated edition (it also includes the Apocrypha). Besides the text of the NRSV, it includes excellent footnotes.

Depends what you want. Readability or accuracy. NRSV is highly regarded. For just reading, I like The Message.

I agree that The Message by Eugene Peterson is highly readable. However, it must be stressed that it is a paraphrase, not a translation. It is highly creative and even inventive at times. It also suffers from the fact that it was produced by one individual rather than the teams of experts that produce the standard translations.
