Tolerance despite disagreements
To all who post on this site and capitalize the word "God":
Thanks. When you do this, in my opinion, you show that you are very big, being able to respect a person's opinions no matter how ludricrous you may think that they are. When disrespect is shown for God, the Bible, and Christianity in general, it an indirect slap at the believers in those things. It's a rare thing on this site sometimes, but I'm very grateful to all of you who are able (and willing!) to be mature and intelligent even in hot debates. Matt |

On the other hand, when Christians capitalize "God" they presuppose the truth of Christianity and thus the view that nonbelievers will go to hell after they die. To say this is disrespectful to nonbelievers is an understatement.

Forcing everyone to pay respect to Christianity is a plot to keep people from thinking clearly about religion, since voicing one's non-belief is usually termed disrespectful. You are on the Secular Web. Do you show respect for the unbelievers who host this board, by, for instance, sending them some money? Or are you a freeloader? |

As a side note, if Christians would refer to the actual names of their god, rather than call him "God," it would be less problematic. For example, there are places in the Hebrew Scriptures where the Hebrew (and subsequently Christian) god is called YHWH or Yahweh. In others, he is called Elohim (gods), or El Eliyon, or Shaddai, or Lord Sabaoth. (Why don't Christians use these names?) I personally have no problem with capitalizing NAMES of gods. rodahi |
