Default God said it...

Have you heard the slogan, “God said it, I believe it, and that settles it!” or another form, “God said it and that settles it!”?

Well I have a translation that I think is appropriate…

”My preacher said it, I repeat it, and that settles it!”

What do you think? Know anyone like that?

On a more serious note, doesn't this point to just how little most christians understand of their faith and the supposed "evidence" for their religion? I posit that an appeal to authority is a primary reason that so many people are christians.

Thumbs down

Even if God existed that would be a sick sentiment.

Thats a closed minded statment and not worth debating with any one who says it. They wouldn't want to listen to some one elses point of view.

Hey, OJ said he was innocent, that settles it.

That ranks right up there with another great idiocy:

"My country, right or wrong."

Well, I guess that lets all the Nazi's off the hook.

Yeah, those people really aren't worth debating with even if their religion were true. That people are so quick to fall back on appeals to authority instead of actually defending their arguments shows that they are intellectually lazy.

I've got another translation, "Someone else thought it. Thinking hurts my wee little mind, so I'll let someone else think for me. Oh, and that settles it."

Yes, it does. This is perhaps one of the biggest factors that started pushing me away from so-called "organized" religion. It's kind of like what seeker630 alluded to in this thread, although he was primarily talking about non-believers. Nonetheless, he made some statements that were about people in general: discussing how people are more social, not joiners or activists (in general), and some of this is evidenced by the perennial low voter turnout at the polls. My point is that many Christians understand very little of their faith (not the ones on this board - they seem to be rather well-informed) and go more out of a need to be social. They talk the talk, but don't necessarily walk the walk, or even understand what the walk is!

"Someone wrote it down two thousand years ago and claimed God said it, I believe it, and that settles it."

Fortunately, I've never run across a Christian in real life who used this argument. If I ever do, I'll just ignore them. They're practically bragging of their unwillingness to use critical thinking.
