Post Modern physics in the Bible (for Rimstalker and LinuxPup)

Hi guys,

I moved your thread into Science & Skepticism because it seemed to me that it had more to do with science than Biblical criticism, but in retrospect I think parts of the issue you're discussing are appropriate for this forum, so I'm starting this thread to siphon off the Biblical aspects of your discussion.

To begin with, I would invite both parties to read the following links and offer their comments if they're so inclined--they seem particularly relevant to the question of whether the OT prefigures certain contemporary advances in physics.

<a href="http://www.geocities.com/WestHollywood/Park/6443/bible/flatearth.htm" target="_blank">The Flat Earth Bible</a>

<a href="http://www.infidels.org/library/magazines/tsr/1990/1/1flat90.html" target="_blank">The Flat Earth Belief of Bible-Writers</a>

Second, I would ask both parties--and everyone involved--to remain civil, and dispense with any further insults. You are all reasonable people, so I expect no problems on this front.

Finally, a question for LinuxPup. You say:
"What I, LinuxPup, say doesn't make the Bible literal or metaphorical, rather the context does."
Could you elaborate on this? What about the context indicates that it is to be taken literally or metaphorically? In the context of your comment, it seems that you meant that grammar contributes to this distinction, a conclusion that I am skeptical of--but my training is in Greek, not Hebrew. Perhaps our resident Hebrew scholars can comment on this further.

(Oh, and <a href="http://iidb.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=57&t=000047" target="_blank">here</a> is the thread that I moved into S&S. Scientific matters are more appropriately discussed there.)

Edited for clarity, and to add links to relevant pages.

Yeah, I'm still around, bgut I started a new job, started the spring semester at college, and also have a few other posts to deal with, so I'm a little busy. I need some time, but I haven't forgotten about this discussion.
