Post Fundies??

Why are bible thumpers called fundamentalist? If you look at the history of Christianity, they are actually innovators...

I think they're called fundamentalists because they're fundamentally brainless. Oh wait... that's a cheap joke and I'm better than that.

No, I'm not!

But seriously, though, I think the name comes from their stripping away the trappings of Christianity that tradition (think Catholics and Orthodox) had heaped on and getting the "fundamentals" of God-Christ-HolySpirit worship from the Bible. I always wonder how they reconcile this stance with the fact that they got their Holy Scriptures from the very organization with which they wish to distance themselves.

Funny how some aspects of their "fundamental" doctrine, like the Rapture, aren't in the Bible at all.

SharonDee,
Ah, I understand now. By stripping away custom, they think they are somehow more fundamental. Maybe someone should tell them their heritage is Jewish?

Correct. There was a pamphlet in circulation around the 1920s titled "Christian Fundamentals" that put forth their points of view. Hence, "Fundamentalists." The term has since been broadened to cover strict interpretations of any religion.
