Post Quotations and Misquotations - Version 3

My essay continues to evolve in response to constructive criticism that I have received.

Hi LordValentine

Very impressive. I'd like to suggest one minor change:

In "The fallacy of the argument from authority" you write:

Quote:
When someone -- no matter what kinds of degrees, qualifications, prestige, or honors he has -- is quoted to support a proposition, it simply does not make that proposition true.
Would you consider changing that sentence to somethin like ". . .it does not automatically make that proposition true."

May I selfishly request a link in the "other web pages" section to my own little contribution?

Thanks for your efforts Lord V; an excellent resource.

That does sound a bit better, I will consider it.

BTW, in my section on the Lewis Overthrust, I of course refer to your document. I mention that that you address what Morris said to the claim that he misquoted and that you provide another misquotation of Whitcomb and Morris did of the same authors. I plan on putting anchors in your document so I can link directly to those points and thus give the reader no excuse.

You have a very good resource that I have had bookmarked in earlier versions.

I would recommend mention of the online creationist's "quote mines" we have both mentioned earlier. These serve no purpose other than providing a pseudo knowledge base for creationist unfamiliar, or unable to become familiar, with the scientific literature. The motives for this you have addressed in your first paragraph, I merely suggest a comment on the techniques employed.

I noticed that you referred to my article, and I was "tickled pink" as the expression goes. Please let me know if I can do anything with my article to make linking to it easier.

The essay has been worked on even more:

<a href="http://home.mmcable.com/harlequin/evol/quotes/quotes3.htm" target="_blank">http://home.mmcable.com/harlequin/evol/quotes/quotes3.htm</a>

It incorporates alot of English correction sent in by a reader, addes a few links, and addes two new types of misquotes with examples in the "Types of Misquotations" subsection.
Those are the omission of ellipses and the abuse of ellipses. Since that is new material, it could use some review.

A minor comment:

Quote:
Radiometric dating cannot be used on the layers of sedimentary rocks with fossils, but rather is used used on volcanic layers above and/or below the fossiliferous rocks.
Sometimes it can. If the fossils occur in a shale, it's possible date the clays (specifically the clay mineral illite) that form during diagenesis, which would give you the time of deposition of that sedimentary rock. This is a minor point, but I thought I'd point it out. It's not widely done, but it is possible.

My proposed FAQ:
Quote:

How about I insert an "usually"?

I have put with my other changes to be made on my hardcopy.
