It's generally the Christians who actively support and promote the God Bless America crap, and when the secular world makes a stink about it, they will chime in with things like; "Stop being so touchy, its not hurting you" or "It's my constitutional right as a US citizen to display my GBA sign", "It's a free country", blah, blah, blah. But can you imagine the uproar if billboards that said "God is a myth" or "Praise Allah", etc were erected along freeways? Those same Christians would cry foul and raise a stink. They want it both ways.

Not only would they raise a stink and complain, but they would probably tear the sign down and send death threats to whoever put it up. This happens almost every time an atheist dares to speak out publicly.

hmm.....counter- propaganda sounds like a fun idea. let's put up signs, make shirts, ect. , saying "god hates america"," god is just a lie", ect. and have some fun. followed, of course, by threatening letters to christians written in arabic. now....where can I buy a freeway?

There are several chapters of Atheists United which participate in the California highway cleanup program - where an organization takes responsibility for cleaning up a stretch of highway and is allowed to post a sign with their name and logo. (Otherwise advertising is forbidden on California freeways.) Vandals defaced one of the signs, but it was fixed quickly.

But that's California.

I always wondered when god became a US citizen.

Apparently god loves everyone equally, but he loves Americans just a little bit more...

"God Bless America" is a beautifully trite song that pays tribute to two icons known for arrogance and self-righteousness: America and God.

It is not so much that Kate Smith made the song hers, it's more that her contemporaries had too much self-respect to sing it.

The Yankees have been playing it ever since the whole 9/11 thing! :banghead: First it was, "... to commemorate the tragic events of September 11th,"
then, "... in honor of our brave men and women fighting terrorism abroad," (or something like that)
then, "... to remember our brave men and women serving in Iraq,"
and now I believe it's back to something like the second one. I honestly don't know, because every time I hear, "OK Yankee fans, it's time to get up and stretch," their cue to start that song, I get up and get away from the TV as quickly as possible, and refill my drink, go to the bathroom, etc. Or if I don't feel like getting up, I'll just change the station for a minute or hit 'MUTE' on the remote.

This seems to be the reaction of some II-ers:

Mine is more along these lines:

I always get the impression when hearing that infernal song that the singers are saying "Nobody can beat us, because GOD is on our side! And nobody can defeat us as long as GOD is on our side!

... It's enough to make one antisocial.

“the slow brainwashing is crushing my will to live.”

PalestineChic19,

Please don’t take this propaganda personally. Try to ignore it. I know it’s not easy. As I said to Ihmhi, who has to sing the anthem every day and has a conflict because of it with his teacher, try to imagine that this is a math problem that you have to solve. Or consider this situation as a chess game. Or try to find a funny side to it. Don’t let this propaganda to influence you. You understand why they’re doing it and that’s why it’s not going to work on you.

You know, in former Soviet Union it was less propaganda than I can see in US. It looks like after the communist revolution in Russia in 1917 US (and other countries’) government got scared that people will take matters in their own hands. Well, in Russia the communist government pretended that they represent people. They, actually, were a bunch of gangsters. But they said to the rest of the world that they care about people and other lies.

So, US government out of mortal fear (they saw what happened in Russia to the government, rich people and priests) started their own propaganda to compensate the communism ideas.

Even after the fall of the Soviet Union the US government (and British, and Canadian [we still have British Quinn as a head of Canada] and many others) just can’t stop. They continue to work hard trying to influence people minds.

I do not wish to any country to experience what happened to Soviet people. Dozens of millions of Soviet people died during Soviet regime…

But, come on! We understand that it’s harder with everyday for any government to control people because people became more intelligent and less religious. US and other governments just can’t understand that THEY HAVE TO CHANGE THEIR POLICY. I don’t know when it’s going to happen… Eventually, it will. So, let’s be patient. Keep your sense of humor and optimism high!
