Default Mormonism

I was wondering about this Christian denomination, if you can even call it that.

I dont know much about it, but I do know that is extremely powerful, SLC mainly, and is growing quickly.

Here is what I do know:

-many of their sacrements are kept secret
-it believes that the Bible is pretty inaccurate
-Smith was a modern prophet and wrote the book of Mormon
-If married in the Temple you can live as a god with God
-in the beginning, there was a "Council of Gods"
-there is currently a group of living prophets who make decisions for the church
-Heaven is grouped into levels called Celestial Bodies

Let me know what you think and if you know anything more than this.

Hi Accorn,

You've got the basics down. I moved here to SLC about 3 years ago for a job transfer and it's very pretty here, but the culture is definitely very different due to the predominance of LDS.

I've learned to live here and curb my irritation for the most part but I've had to make compromises, i.e. can't have anything offensive on the bumper of my car for fear of vandalism.

Here's some more tidbits on what the LDS believe:

Jesus was the spirit brother of satan.
Once a woman dies, she can't go to heaven unless "called up" by her husband.
We're all spirit babies in heaven before being brought down to earth (pre-existence).
The president of the church is a prophet; kind of similar to the pope I believe.

It's interesting also how the mormon's beliefs have changed over time, in regards to polygamy, african americans, etc.

I have friends who are mormon, and they're good people, they just have odd beliefs. Very odd.

I grew up Mormon. Haven't stepped foot in a ward/stake house in 18 years, but....
They use a King James Bible.
They ARE christians. They just happen to have the continuing adventures of Jesus H Christ.
JC didn't go straight to heaven. He came to North America, where he hung out with the natives, who were actually a lost tribe of Isreal(the Lamanites/pronounced lame-an-ites) who came to North America by sea a few thousand years ago. You get that? American Indians are really Jews. The Book of Mormon chronicles the mis-adventures of this surly band of misfits.
You can get one for free on thier website(bible/book of mormon/pearl of great price).
It's worth a read if you want to check them out, but it's pretty fucking lame. Joseph Smith was sloppy. Just goes to show how stupid people can be.
Jesus is Adam too. It's like one of those Broadway one man shows. He's even got cymbals strapped to his knees.

LOL, seems to me the OT can be described this very same way.

Butswana:

I seem to remember from talking to Mormans when I was in high school (lo these many years ago), that they have a concept of a Mrs. God.

True?

Hmmm... I'm thinking no. It was pretty male dominated. They didn't openly advocate beating your wife, but cocks were king.
All portrayals of god consisted of two bearded guys in white robes, one old with white hair the other young with brown hair. This holy ghost character was no where to be found. I always wondered what it looked like. So whenever some one mentioned said ghost, I got a mental picture of some body wearing a sheet with a bowler and Ray-bans.
No Mrs. God. The dicks were definitly in charge.
If I remember correctly, they weren't to hip on the colored folks either.
