Thumbs up Baptist Joint Committee issues statement concerning Pledge

Although disagreeing with the Ninth Circuit's findings of unconstitutionality, the BJCPA neverthless upholds the idea of a secular state and decries what it calls "...blurring our allegiance to Caesar with our ultimate allegiance to God."

Odd that they don't think "under God" is unconstitutional, but they disagree with it's inclusion in the pledge based on some of the very reasons that the 1st Amendment exists (IMHO).

Bill,

I don't have a comment regarding this regarding this thread. However, I wanted to say that i thought the letter that you wrote to the Greensboro News & Record on Monday was well written and that I appreciated it and agreed with it. (I live in Greensboro.) Thanks!

Bill, would you mind posting the text of your letter (or a link) so we could read it?

Talking

Actually, I already did, in <a href="http://iidb.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=59&t=000286" target="_blank">this thread</a>.

You can also read it <a href="http://www.news-record.com/news/opinions/letters/monlets01.htm" target="_blank">online</a> at the News & Record website.

You can also read <a href="http://www.news-record.com/news/opinions/letters/satletters.htm" target="_blank">here</a> another letter to the same paper by one of our other members, Chuck Fristians.

Interestingly, for an area in the buckle of the Bible Belt, letters are running better than 2:1 in favor of the Ninth Circuit.

Regards,

Bill Snedden

The same thing is happening here. Only one opinion has been run that is against the ruling. And that one used the Constitution's "in the year of our Lord" as evidence that we are a Christian nation. So far I and another person have letters that cite the treaty of tripoli. The area fundies must not be too happy. I wonder if the good ole boy who called me called everyone else.

That always makes me chuckle. I can only assume that those who go to church on Sunday actually worship the Sun, then. And that saying, "See you next Wednesday" is the equivalent of saying, "May the blessings of Woden be upon you."

Hail Woden!

Thanks Bill, both for the links and for the letter. It's great.

Given the number of mainline denominations who have come out in support of separation, and all the eloquent pro-9CC letters I've seen in various papers, I suspect that the Dim One might back down on this one (that's how I interpret Lynn Cheney's recent comments favoring separation). That may be just wishful thinking though.
