Thumbs down The Prophet Muhammad's 9-year-old Wife?

I did some research to see if it was true that the "Prophet" Muhammad married a 6 year old girl, Aishah. The research documents seem to vary when reporting her age. Most say she married the Prophet between the age of 6 and 9. Other sources say Aishah was 9 or 10 years old when she married Muhammad, but these are mainly from very politically correct sources, such as American Universities, which obviously don't want to offend.

After finding out that it was true, that Muhammad had in fact married a child, I wondered how Islamic scholars justify it. Here is one example I found...

Quote:
'Aishah's marriage to the Prophet Muhammad(P) at an early age allowed her to be an eye witness to the personal details of his life and carry them on the succeeding generations. By being both spiritually and physically near to the Prophet(P), the marriage prepared 'Aishah to be an example all Muslims, especially women, for all times.

Doesn't this sounds like making excuses for pedophilia?

Actually the concept of pedophillia is being reevaluated from DSM specifications here is a link.

Now, I do not even know why this Outdated debate keeps reappearing. Do you know that standards of society change according to time and place and its respective cultures. Do you feel the need to do a little bit "revisionist" history writing by superimposing the norms of contemporary american society over those of Saudi Arabian (and most Asian and Semitic ) societies of 1400 years ago.

I have a remedy for you. Take a college level Sociology or Anthropology course.

I know all about sociology and anthropolgy. I also know about the middle east and islam, as I have spent a great deal of time there and speak Farsi.

A nine-year-old is a nine-year-old. A six-year-old is a six-year-old. It's pretty hard to spin this one.

You have to know that the concept of morality and ethics vary according to time period .

We all (especially on this forum) like to "superimpose the norms of contemporary American society" on early Christian ideas and norms of 2000 years ago.

Fair is fair. You cannot dump on Christianity and at the same time give Islam a pass under the same conditions of scrutiny.

It is you who needs a course in intellectual fairness.

PS----if I went too far with that and have mistaken you, -----------that you have never dumped on Christianity on this forum for those exact same reasons that you dislike so much--------then I am sincerely sorry.

Are you saying then that the morals of the author of the Koran aren't acceptable to 21st century society?

Leave away, avoiding the question of moral absolutes. After all, Muhammad was allowed an exception to the Qur'anic rule of having four wives (he had 10 wives and 25 concubines).

So Muslim women are supposed to aspire to being sexually abused by a pedophile...interesting.
