But the evidence was examined many years ago, and evolution won then. The only reason we are still having this 'debate' is because a loud minority of sore losers can't accept it.

I'm not talking about the columnist here, just the idea of Christianity giving hope.

I think the reason that people believe that Christianity gives people hope isn't because of the 10 commandments, nor is it because of the manner in which we were supposedly created, rather it is the belief that God loves everyone and that he will never leave them nor forsake them, and he has a plan for them, etc.

Yet because public schools prohibit this kind of teaching, they are trying to find ways of somehow introducing people to the Christian faith, namely the ten commandments.

I am a Christian but I am not arguing in favor of either approach, just giving my opinions.

please don't attack me and call me a homophobic bigot or anything...cause it has happenned...too many times.

Why don't they try and introduce people to Christianity the old fashioned way-- door to door-- instead of getting the taxpayers to do it? Why should I subsidize their ineptness as evangelists?

hungry_student: I am not sure if you think schools should be allowed to teach xian beliefs. It looks as though you think the prohibition might be justification for their trying to bring the 10 Commandments in instead.

If you really do think that public schools should be teaching the consolations of xianity (which flavour, by the way?), should they also be teaching islam and jihad, or the buddhist way or wicca?

Any religion which requires the government to coerce people to join its fold is either a weak religion or one which consists of insecure followers.

If Xtianity is so obviously the truth, and if being a Xtian is so obviously the best way to live, then people will make this choice on their own.

try to think on the bright side, if they all send their children to private schools where they learn the wonderful gooey mushy feeling they get knowing the world is flat, then in a few generations the christians of this world will be even more retarded then they are today. think of the job openings that will suddenly prop up when all of those christians who got into cushy jobs for just being christians stop being able to actually perform their job!

and if we wait a few more generations, we'll have a sub-race of inbred beings so stupid, they could not be classified as sentient, we'd have our very own slaverace! wouldn't that just be neat?

I wasn't ever arguing in favor of it...I was simply saying that Christianity can offer hope because it teaches that people are of importance and that a God loves them, I wasn't saying it should be taught in public schools, I was just saying why it could possibly offer hope to people. And in reply to avalanche...how does teaching that God loves people and that they are important and meaningful have anything to do with the rest of their education? Is it impossible to keep standards as high as they already are (note the sarcasm) while telling people that they are loved? And, no I'm not saying that they should, I'm simply saying that I don't understand how it would make the students dumber if they did.

God loves everyone and that he will never leave them nor forsake them, and he has a plan for them

Unless, of course, they decide that (given the complete lack of visible evidence for his presence, and the inability of all his many holy scriptures to agree, and all the wars fought in his name, and his incomprehensibility) he does not exist, and so it is senseless to worship him.

Then he sends them to hell.

h_s, I'm a mod in the Existence of God(s) forum, too. You should come there and read some of the ongoing discussions.

If you tell someone the truth, and they kill themself...versus if you tell someone a lie and they live on some false hope? Which is better for a productive society? Completely detached from any religious views, couldn't it be advantageous for a government looking to have productive citizens? I'm not saying it is or isn't...just the possibility. If everyone believes that they are part of some higher plan, I'm sure they will work and encourage much better than if they think that their entire world is the product of natural forces.

And Jobar...correct. Yes, unless they decide to reject him. He won't force himself upon anyone. Also, I used to come here all the time and read everything, but I haven't been here for a few months, so I'm just now getting back into things. I actually started reading here about two years ago. It's a very dynamic place. I'll honestly say that.
