Question Stamping currency...

I have been thinking of ordering a stamp to use on my paper money to obliterate the words "In God We Trust" and maybe replace it with something more appropriate such as "E Pluribus Unum". I understand there may be some question of legality here but I'm not really concerned about that. I'm wondering if anyone else already does this, what their thoughts are regarding the legality, and what anyone's thoughts are regarding the idea in general.

Thanks!

You can try this site. I have ordered it but I never used it yet.

I read that the law states that you can't deface money with the intent of taking it out of circulation. So since that is not your intent, you should be OK. But then , I am not a lawyer.

I use either a fine-point black marker or black ballpoint pen to cross out IGWT, and write in "E Pluribus Unum" directly above or below it. I also use a heavier marker to completely obliterate the word "God". Some day I'll scan in some of my bills and post links here. Did I mention that I spend a part of my average work day on boring conference calls???

I use a "Sharpie" fine point permanent marker and scratch out IGWT on every bill that crosses my hands. I too have been thinking about getting a stamp to print "E Pluribus Unum" on the bills.

Here's last year's thread on currency correction from the archives:

I didn't even think of that. ^_^ Money is money. I don't trust in god, I trust in government-backed bills to begin with.. so why even bother?

I ordered my stamp from godoffmoney.com not long before they stopped selling them. I still stamp my money (when I actually have cash, that is). When I don't have my stamp available, I use a marker or a pen to mark out the god part.

From the godoffmoney list:

<a href="http://www.dispatch.com/news/features01/jan01/566592.html" target="_blank">In God, they don't trust: local pair wants motto off money</a>

Quote:

Kurt Douglass, agent in charge in the Columbus office of the Secret Service, which investigates crimes involving money, said using the stamp on bills technically would be a misdemeanor. But practically, he said, the agency would not pursue such cases.

Brunsman and Nekervis are looking for allies. They said some members of Central Ohio Humanists and Students for Free Thought at OSU have expressed support.

The two also would like to grab the attention of a national organization, such as Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

But Rob Boston, assistant director of communications for the Washington-based Americans United, said, "Our position has always been to pick fights where you have a chance of winning."

Overt sectarian actions -- such as maintaining a cross on a courthouse lawn with tax money -- are winnable cases, he said.

"What the courts feel about some of these more generic endorsements of religion, like the use of under God in the Pledge of Allegiance and the words In God We Trust on currency, they see that as more benign," Boston said.

Thanks for all the good info, everyone. I have already taken to lining it out with a ballpoint pen and it feels great.

I do the marker trick when I think of it. The only hitch is my pot dealer, he gets nervous if I hand him marked bills.
