Talking Separation of Church and Dr.Pepper

Some Bible thumpers are unhappy that Dr. Pepper has dropped "under God" out of the Pledge of Allegiance on its cans, from an article copied to this post;

''Students upset Dr Pepper edits God out of pledge

02/01/2002

The Associated Press

DUBUQUE, Iowa — Some students at Bible Baptist Academy are taking their quarrel with Dr Pepper/Seven Up Inc. nationwide, hoping other consumers will agree the company shouldn't have taken "under God" out of the Pledge of Allegiance.

Some said the were happy to see that the soft-drink company had designed a new patriotic can featuring the Statue of Liberty. But they were disappointed that text on the can paraphrased The Pledge of Allegiance, leaving out the phrase, "under God." It reads, "One Nation ...Indivisible."

"I was hurt and upset when I saw that. We say the pledge every day and that's the most important part," said Sara Lattie, 18, of Dubuque, who was helping stock the pop machine at her school when she noticed the new cans. Lattie, who is a graduate of and a teacher at the Christian school, called Dr Pepper to ask why the phrase was left off the cans.

"They told me there wasn't enough room [for Gods...too many already]. Well they could have left off 'Indivisible' instead," Lattie said.

She showed the can to her students who were equally outraged and who decided to write letters and send e-mails to friends, conservative talk shows and the media, to pressure Dr Pepper to change the can design.

"I wrote that leaving out God on the cans is not right. [I love this part] Our country was founded 'under God' and they are leaving out our very foundation by doing this," said Josh Wolf, 17, of Dubuque, a[nother ignorant] student at Bible Baptist Academy.

The private school was started in September at Bible Baptist Church for members' children, most of whom had been home-schooled until last year. There are 28 students in grades kindergarten through 12. At the academy, the students begin their day with prayer, say several group prayers throughout the day and pray grace at meal times. They study regular academic courses as well as Bible courses.

The cans have not seemed to upset many other Dr Pepper consumers, however. Besides the four complaints from Dubuque, the company has fielded 200 other negative comments nationwide about the new design, according to Michael Martin [THE Michael Martin???], director of corporate communications for the Plano, Texas-based company. Since it was introduced in mid-November, 18 million of the cans in question have been produced for Dr Pepper.

"There is a fairly limited area for graphics on a standard can after the required information is included. We think we have a message that is resoundingly patriotic, a non-denominational, bipartisan message that we are a united nation,"
Martin said of the design suggested by one of the firm's bottlers.''

So, drink lots of Dr. Pepper to show your support!

This was a very gutsy move by Dr Pepper, and I'm sure they will be receiving a lot of negative mail on the subject. Write them and show them your support!

I'm not a big fan of the soda, but if you like it, it wouldn't hurt to buy a few extra cases.

Wink

Now, what are the odds that the guy responsible for removing the religious addition ("under God" 1954, IIRC) from the pledge would be named Michael Martin, as is the author of The Case Against Christianity, Atheism: A Philosophical Justification, and other decidedly non-Christian works?

Hmmm....

Media alert from our local center of non-belief:

Quote:
Center for Inquiry-West Executive Director James Underdown will appear tonight on the Hannity and Colmes show at 6 pm Pacific Time, 9 pm Eastern Time, toward the end of the hour.

This show is on the Fox News Channel on your cable or satellite system.

The topic is Dr. Pepper's placing the pre-1954 Pledge of Allegiance on cans of soda. This version does not contain the words "under God" in it.

Gotta Love the media spin that it was nowhere mentioned in the news article that the "under Gawud" part was only added in 1954, and makes it sound like it had never been said like that before Dr. Pepper removed it.

"...text on the can paraphrased The Pledge of Allegiance, leaving out the phrase, "under God." and "...why the phrase was left off the cans."

The company definitely has my support. I would love to hear more about the company's side of the story. Who made that gutsy decision? Was there any opposition to the idea within the company? I'm kinda surprised there isn't more outrage about this.

And, yes, the media definitely slanted that piece big time!
