Question Historical Jesus Theories

"You can't tell your scholars without a program!"

I have finally come to a completion of the task that I set out to fulfill some time ago of providing a guide to contemporary theories on the historical Jesus and the birth of Christianity. That effort in its current revision can be found here:

<a href="http://www.earlychristianwritings.com/theories.html" target="_blank">http://www.earlychristianwritings.com/theories.html</a>

However, I do not believe that my project as it stands is final, and I would like to know of how to improve it. I ask for comments in a few areas specifically.

1. Is there any scholar who writes on the historical Jesus who I should include in my survey who is not already included in the current two dozen?

2. Is there any scholar that I have misrepresented in some way in what I say about their theories? Who and in what way?

3. Is there any scholar that I do not present fully in leaving out an important point? Who and on what point?

4. Does my presentation reveal any distorting bias on my own part? How so?

And I would welcome any other comments and criticisms along the same vein. Please hold my work to the highest standard, as I realize that the few words I say on each scholar will be the only exposure that a large public will have to
their views.

best,
Peter Kirby

Man! Your stuff blows away most scholarly sites I've seen. Great work!

How about *Joachim Jeremias*? Hasn't he written some books on the historical Jesus? Maybe not...

Either way, awesome site!

I notice you don't have Robert Price, the radical agnostic.

Peter: Maybe you should have a section covering the thinking of people like JM Robertson, Alfred Loisy and others, maybe a pre-WWII section.

Peter:

I, as well, applaud your fine effort - great site! The only other addition I would make is
Ben Witherington, especially for his work in the following publications:

"THE JESUS QUEST: The Third Search for the Jew of Nazareth"

and

"The Christology of Jesus"

cheers,
jkb

Question

Excellent page!

Does anyone bother with David Friedrich Strauss or Charles Guignebert anymore?

Outstanding work as usual Peter. My only comment would be to echo the sentiments of another poster that it might be worthwile to at least provide references to earlier HJ/Text Critical research that set the stage for the modern dialogue, Bultmann, Schweitzer et. al are worth knowing about to get an overall picture of how the discussion has come to the point it has.

This page won`t load correctly on my Mac.

All I get is the green banner followed by two paragraphs and two links for Doherty and Freke & Gandy. The rest of the long scrollable page is just a blank white background.

I just tried it on my Windows PC upstairs and had no trouble loading the full page.

The Mac is running OS 9.1 with IE5 and has no trouble veiwing any other pages I visit. You might want to check to see if this is happening with other Mac users.

Great job, Peter!

Something that may be useful for this list would be a brief biography of each author, including their education and profession. I think it is fairly relevant whether someone judging the historical Jesus question is or is not a historian, and whether they have a background in a related field.
