Talking Success Story

I know many of us sometimes feel that it is worthless to try and explain to believers the faults and fallacies found in their beliefs. Many of us have also been faced with anger and intolerance when explaining how skepticism, critical thinking, and using the scientific method are the best methods available of filtering out reality from the bunk. Most of the time our efforts seem to be a waste. But every once in a while, someone listens. They begin to disable their preconceptions and prejudices. They examine and evaluate claims, beliefs, and life in a new and critical way. They begin to think for themselves.

One such case is demonstrated here. I received this e-mail from a friend who, a previously stanch Christian, is starting to see things in a new light after several conversations with him:

Quote:
I tuned into swaggart on the radio today and listened to his entire message. It seemed like I'd never really listened to before to the techniques used to persuade people on the faith. On my observations alone I picked up:

1. The separation of the people from the speaker as though he is some spiritual guru who is about to tell you some profound divine word. This separation keeps the mystical aspect of the relationship between clergy and laity alive.

2. The constant explanation of why you need them and this message, because no one understands it like we do.

3. The many repetitive affirmations that are similar to eastern chantings or a cheer at a rally. Constantly the congregates are exposed to constant scrutiny and are told that they're not good enough nor capable of being good enough to be loved by God therefore God had to kill His Son to show just has pissed and serious He is about sin. ACK!!!

4. The congregates regardless who they are assumed by ministry as searchers for truth and they can find it through them by listening to them tell you the Word of God.

There's more but I was so like in shock listening to swaggart, that it just blew my mind.

It is delightful to see someone that used to be such an unwavering believer start to progress beyond their superstitions, narrow views, and blind faith.

Any more success stories?
