Default Are Fundies a minority?

OK

Due to popular (or probably unpopular) demand, I am starting this thread.

Only bad thing about starting a thread is that it is a bit like giving birth to a baby. And you feel responsible for it for like forever --long after you wish it would kind of go away. (Cherry Picking thread comes to mind)

Definitely premature----because not only am I seriously lousy about researching things on the Web, I do not even know how to "cute and paste" (not a typo).

So I hope you all realize how much effort you are making this old semi-retired phart put himself through.

Anyway, I think I am correct in stating what I think is obvious. -------Fundamentalist, literalist, Bible thumping--you are all going straight to hell Christianity is still a MINORITY in this country and just kind of tolerated by the rest of mainstream Christianity.

Will research it and come back to you.

In the meantime, I know many of you are excellent researchers and also have a great knowledge of statistics concerning religion ---so if any of you have any statistics on this matter you would like to post---Have at it.

(And if you think that the preceding was a very sneaky, although also very obvious, attempt to get others to do my work for me---then----------BINGO)

Seriously, I went looking online this morning for hard figures and couldn't find any in the short time I looked. When I do find some I will let you know.

R'BAC - maybe you need to buy World Christian Encyclopedia : A Comparative Survey of Churches and Religions in the Modern World (2 Volume Set) and figure it all out for us.

However, with 1,200 different Christian denominations in the USA alone, and 34,000 worldwide (my figures from www.religoustolerance.org/christ7.htm) figuring out which are "fundies" and which are "mainstream" and which are "liberal" may be a tough job. Let us know when you have the definitive answer

A rational approach would be to simply define a "fundy" as someone who watches TBN or 700 Club more than once every three months, I would think. I seriously doubt it's more than 40 million people, although I don't have time to look up the figures.

Gee. One 24 hr Christian station watched regularly by 10,000,000 people is probably what you'll find. I don't think much of TBN anymore myself, although it was good to see in it's heyday.

Nope. Wouldn't work.

I watch the 700 club now and then to A) be entertained, or B) to raise my blood pressure to 200/180.

*ROTFLOL* I had to reread the post because I thought you said Benny HILL and said "What does he have to do with fundamentalist Christianity?"

I see we're at a loss for a meaningful response again.

I think we'll find "Rational" is an apt adjective for "BAC" here.

Unusual.

I think a better approach would be to take the percentage of christian TV stations on your basic cable service. There are 2 stations out of 27 here for about 7.5 percent. Add the 4 hours a day of religious programming on three other cable access channels (we will ingore Sunday mornings when 10 of the 27 have church shows from 8:00 am to noon) and call it a round 10 percent.

Downright scientific if you ask me. Thank the entertainment gods for extended cable service.

No, I'm just at a loss for interest right now. I'm more interested in stuffing this sub into my mouth.

Plus, I DID say I would go research it soon as I could.
