Exclamation Nutty Neighbor

I've lived in a duplex for the past six months. A single woman occupied the adjoining unit. She was a strange duck, but nice enough. She kept to herself so I didn't really get to know her well.

She moved out suddenly about three weeks ago. She asked for help in moving a few large items into her rental truck. She said she had gotten a lucrative job offer in another state and hadn't been able to give our landlord much notice. She also mentioned giving her mini-van to a friend.

Her van remained in our driveway after her departure. I called my landlord after a week and asked him what the story was on that. He was out of town and said he knew nothing of her departure. He just got back and I offered to help him clean up her place (she left a tremendous mess). There were Christian bumper stickers all over the walls as well as other paraphenalia to indicate she was very religious. Then there were a few kinky sex manuals - and boxes of ammunition. I'm talking hundreds of rounds of all different sizes.

I'm glad I never mentioned I was an atheist!

Perhaps this should be reported to the police?? Sounds like a potentially dangerous person, or a person running from the law. It’s very odd she would leave so suddenly and the landlord didn’t even know about it. Gosh … that is just scary. I have had some wacked out neighbors before, but wow … glad you didn’t tell her you were an atheist.

I think it is more of the combining facts that: she left in such a rush, had "Christian bumper stickers all over the walls as well as other paraphenalia", kinky sex manuals (well, not really a indicator of anything) and boxes of ammunition lying around (probably had more but took it with her). MOST people don't have that much ammunition. (my grand father has about 200+ guns, and doesn't really have much ammo)

Edit: I would still worry about a person who instead of having "Christian bumper stickers all over the walls as well as other paraphenalia" had "Anti-Religious/Atheistic bumper stickers all over the walls as well as other paraphenalia".

This whole thing is so weird. I know that she left with her rental truck less than half filled. I know because I helped her stack heavy items in such a way as to insure most of the stuff didn't shift around during her trip.

She didn't seem at all dangerous. I did bring up the suggesting of contacting the police with my landlord but I doubt that he will. He's a devout Christian himself but of the "live and let live" variety. He's very trusting and very forgiving.

I didn't mention earlier that my neighbor was two months behind on her rent. She may have left without telling our landlord out of fear of legal action. I still wonder why she would leave so much stuff behind when she had plenty of room in her truck to take more. Especially the ammunition. It's not like she can hide her identity. She left her van with the license plate still on it.

I'm just astounded at the religious mind.

Do you know, outside of America a woman living in a duplex armed to the teeth would be considered dangerous. A single handgun for personal protection I can understand, in the American context, but it sounds like she had an arsenal.

Right to bear arms or not, nobody has a good reason to have more than one gun in their home, unless its a displayed collection - and it obviously wasn't that. It might be legal, but that doesn't make it right.

Does anybody know if the NRA permits people who are Atheists to join. Just wondering, I would not want to join.

Here in America I find it a little unnerving.

Any indication that she had firearms to go with the ammo? Without firearms (which you've given no indication that she owned, other than the presence of ammunition), she could hardly be said to be "armed to the teeth."

And did she have any friends/visitors? Is it possible that the ammo or any of the other stuff she left behind wasn't hers, that someone else was storing it there?

Either way, this is definitely wacky, and I'd be glad she moved out. And the ammo should definitely be turned over to the police.
