That is a pretty amazing picture - further proof that science, not superstition, best serves humankind.

I find it interesting that the site mentions this surgery would not normally be sanctioned, because the risk of death to the patient (fetus) outweighed the likely benefit. It seems perhaps that the legality of abortion and lack of personhood of the fetus allowed for these people to try this daring course of action.

Oh, and by the way, the fact that the fetus's hand grasped the surgeon's finger means exactly zero to me in regards to abortion. Apes and monkeys have similar capability, as well as greater cognitive function than a twenty-week fetus, and are not considered persons.

Impressive stuff, and some serious food for thought.

Though I think not nessecarily only for those in favour of abortion; many would certainly take the potential quality of life (or perhaps, sadly enough lack of) of the kid into acount. And such advanced technoligy surely won't be available to all who'd need it.

(Quote from the mother)``I wasn't concerned about a child who couldn't walk,'' said Julie, ``but I want a child who knows me.''
I think it goes without saying the mother also thought about what the kid would want; which mother wouldn't?

But again, impressive stuff.

Thumbs down

I am appalled by that picture and am stunned that you of all people, Amie, would post such a monstruous link without a word of warning. The highly politicized tone of the accompanying article was another unexpected displeasure. Your op was callously noncommittal considering the anvil about to drop on our heads.

You don't think it would have been decent to give a single word of warning that you were linking to a potentially vomit-inducing picture?

I do believe you are the queen of forum drama.
Its an amazing picture, not highly detailed when you dont click on it. Its a great picture showing life. I see no problem. You just look for arguments, well look elsewhere I am not going to waste my time with you or come back to this thread, I posted it because I thought some might like to see the picture.
how strange that YOU dont think people should put warnings on pictures that theists would find offensive but this one warranted a warning...please!

Vomit inducing? I've seen roadkill that was more vomit-inducing than that little picture...

LIVIUS : Are you having a problem dealing with what science has been able to accomplish?
The fact that this child is being rescued from spina bifada did not even enter your self centered " oh how horrible" type of misplaced indignation.
I suggest you avoid ever visiting Dachau... you might faint.
Or is it the fact that the little fellow is actualy grabbing the hand of the surgeon which triggered such reaction?
But taking care of ill people as I do, I do not vomit on the reality of life especialy one which carries hope.
