Default "X-men" comic books and movie tackle Christianity

Anybody been reading recent issues of this comic? The character Nightcrawler-the blue demonesque X-man with the teleportation ability-recently talked to a Jesus statue about Jesus's "uncertain tests"(Which I BTW struggled with while I was a Christian) and also tackled desire, evolution and other things the church has had issues with. "Wolverine" likewise had the title character battle crooked priests last summer.
It looks like the movie might also deal with this--a quick glance at the trailer will show the characters in a church.

Any thoughts on this?

I gather from reading over my boss's shoulder that Kurt (Nightcrawler) is now a Catholic priest!

For an excellent story about the X-Men battling a fundamentalist preacher type, try to find the graphic novel "God Loves, Man Kills". It may be hard to track down, being from the early 80's, but it's a top-notch story.

Walross, word is that the new XMen movie is an adaptation of God Loves Man Kills.

I remember from the cartoon The X-men were in Europe being attacked by good Christian peasants. In the end X-men win. Wolverine got the worst of it but at the end he went to the church and prayed. I found that really annoying.
My impression, which may be wrong, is that because these things are really aimed at kids the powers that be are going to push the 'Christianity is ultimately good' line.

Default I collect X-Men

Yup, I find this extremely fascinating.

Coinciding with me caught between losing my faith or firmly adhering to what i was brought up to be, I think as if this storyline was somewhat predetermined (Determinists Hurrah!).HEHEHE!

"God Loves, Man Kills" is Chris Claremont at his best - and that should make for a good movie theme.

NEwei, just curious, are there any atheist / agnostic comic collectors here?

Well, you can count me

About X2 being an adaptation of GLMK(SPOILERS AHEAD!)

The villain is still Stryker, but in this case Stryker is the leader of a shadowy "Weapon X" style organization which created Wolverine's adamantium. The basic plot outline of GLMK-Magneto teaming up with the X-men, Professor X's powers being used to kill mutants and so on is right out of GLMK.
There are currently comic and novel adaptations in stores for those who want a sneak peek.
A few Marvel characters have religious backgrounds. The Thing is Jewish, although he is not practicing. Magneto is also either Jewish or a Gypsy. The Avenger Firebird is a Catholic missionary. Storm is a Pagan. Thor thinks he is a God. Daredevil is also a Catholic.

Don't forget that X-Man Kitty Pryde is Jewish -- or she was in the 80's when I collected the title.

That is annoying. I remember being really impressed with a particular issue where the X-Men were fighting Dracula (dumb idea, yes I know) and Wolverine tried to use a cross on him. Dracula just laughed and swatted him aside explaining that it didn't work because Wolverine didn't believe in god. I remember thinking "can Wolverine get any cooler?"
