Six hundred threescore [and] six
I've always said that the number of the beast is 36,006. I always get nothing but blank stares.

Look at it! Six hundred threescore! Six hundred SETS OF threescore!

If God had meant 666, he'd've written "Six hundred AND threescore and six" or "Six hundred, threescore and six." There's no punctuation and no conjunction, which implies multiplication, not addition!

He's GOD! God doesn't make typos! Beware 36,006!

I can think of one Latin phrase that adds up to 666:

I + V + X + L + C + D = DCLXVI

What's so important about those numerals? I don't know.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

So, 666 is a kinda code that is meant to reveal the name of "the beast" here on earth; in this case Nero by adding up the numerical representation of the letters of his name.

Does that correctly sum it up, or did I miss a point anywhere?

Quote:
The number of the beast has been interpreted to stand for Pope Leo X (by Michael Stifel (1486 - 1567)). He considered the name LEO DECIMVS X, added the values of the constituent letters L,D,C,I,V,X in their meaning of Roman numerals, discarded the other letters because they do not denote a Roman numeral and also the Roman numeral 'M' because its meaning 'Mystery' eliminates its value.
Apart from Stifel's invention, 666 has been variously interpreted to symbolize the Pope of Rome in general (according to Napier); Martin Luther (according to Napier's contemporary the Jesuit Father Bongus S.J.); Kaiser Wilhelm (during World War 1); Adolf Hitler (during World War 2); and earlier the Roman Emperor Nero (because 666 is claimed to spell 'Nero' when expressed in the letter symbols of the Aramaic language, in which the Book of Revelations was originally written.)

So, I take it that many people have many different ways of looking at this, eh? In other words, no one really knows?

Thanks again!

Revelation 13:16
And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

You might also want to note that the "mark" of the beast as mentioned in 13:16 also points to Nero. Roman slaves were often branded with with the name of their owners and sometimes devoted Roman soldiers would brand themselves with the name of their general.

Most Christians are confused about it and are still looking for the "antichrist" because the prophecy in Revelation failed to come true. Those who don't try to hold up Revelation as prophetic can see that it was most likely the wishful thinking of a persecuted cultist.

If you want a really good analysis on Revelation (the original Jewish one which was later confused into the current Christian one), I recommend This link. He details all the references to Roman/Jewish history as well as the regurgitation of elements from the book of Daniel.

The same author does a critique of the "prophetic" book of Daniel which completely demystifies it and is excellent reading.

The Historical reconstruction of Jesus he does is also very good but may take many days to get through.

It goes back to that "faith" thing. They believed that Nero was "the beast". When it turned out that the prediction in Revelation didn't come true within their lifetimes, the next generation believed that "the beast" must refer to someone in the future, maybe even within their lifetime. When it turned out that the prediction in Revelation didn't come true within their lifetimes, the next generation believed that "the beast" must refer to someone in the future, maybe even within their lifetime. Ad Nauseum...
The thing that always gets me is the people that know what revelations means. The end is always near. Babylon is Rome, London, Berlin, New York, and a hundred other citys. The beast has been identified as hundreds of different men. The number means this that or the other. But these people don't seem to let that bother them, thousands of people, over the last 2000 years or so, have been totally convinced that they were right, and the were obviously all wrong. But that does not matter because somehow each one is totally convinced that they are right. It is also quite funny because no one ever ever deciphers revelations, and finds out that the end is not near, but maybe coming in a hundred years or so, it's always coming now. The end is near!

I just saw a guy on tv the other day actually talking about it, rambling on about sign after sign that really could've fit to almost anywhere anytime. It's sad really, and sucks that they let it on tv Oh well, gotta have free speech.

I remember reading an article that drew a connection between the number of the beast and Mammon. They cited I Kings 10:14 as a source for the number 666. They fleshed it out a bit more than this, and I remember it seeming pretty reasonable, but I can't recall where I read this article.

666 was a certain amount of money that Solomon had. However some Bible verses translate the Revelation passage as 616, so there might not be a connection, although the whole "buying and selling" bit makes sense. You need money to buy and sell.
If Money however is "The Mark Of The Beast" then pretty much every single person is going to hell except those who use a barter system. Heck, even Jesus and the Apostles would therefore have "The Mark of the Beast" since the NT states that they did in fact use Money. And God probably assigned the Jewish to hell by stating uses of money in the Mosaic Law.

Do'h!

Ouch! That's my lucky number. (And yes, I believe in lucky numbers. Just one more freedom I have and freethinkers don't. )
